Democratic candidate for the 7th District Congressional seat in Virginia
Roderic H. Slayton supports President Clinton's move "to curb
cigarette smoking by juveniles." Earlier this year, Slayton proposed
that "federal tobacco taxes be increased 25 percent, with the money
going fight tobacco-induced illnesses" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress,
September 4, 1996). Democratic nominee in the 5th District Virgil
Goode, who has supported tobacco interests, disagrees.
Can they both be right? As Barney
Frank used to say, "Your base in politics is made up of the people
who are with you even when you are wrong" (Howie Carr, Boston Magazine,
September 1996).
