J. Michael Crafaik III
"is taking a second
shot at becoming
the lone Republican on the historically Democratic (Charlottesville City)
council. Crafaik emerged as the Republican candidate Saturday after a party
mass meeting in the Charlottesville Circuit Court building, where he was
nominated by the 25 registered voters who attended" (Kimberly O'Brien,
The Daily Progress, February 19, 1998).
"'I've grown up in
Charlottesville. I've operated a business for four years. Charlottesville
is my life,' he said. 'I'd just like to bring some new ideas, a fresh perspective,
to broaden the City Council.' Fellow Republican Thane Kerner, who chairs
the Charlottesville Industrial Authority, said the 'most important component'
of Crafaik's candidacy is that he'll offer voters another option"
(Kimberly O'Brien, The Daily Progress, February 19, 1998).
