"Republicans
expressed delight at [Virgil] Goode's attendance Tuesday night at the South
Boston [fundraising] event, which raised an estimated $25,000 for [George]
Allen (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, December 16, 1999).
"[5th District U.S. Rep. Virgil H.] Goode [D-Rocky Mount] avoided
any outright endorsement of Allen and said he was attending district events
among friends when he attended the fund-raiser and subsequent Chatham party
with Allen. 'It was an opportunity to see some old friends and also to see
some new ones,' Goode said after the fund-raiser'" (Bob Gibson,
The Daily Progress,December 16, 1999).
"Goode said he will announce in January
whether his bid for a third term in November of 2000 will be as a Democrat.
His attendance at the fund-raising event - where Allen praised him as a
conservative ideological soul mate - increased speculation that he might
switch to become a Republican or run as an independent" (Bob Gibson,
The Daily Progress, December 16, 1999).
"Larry J. Sabato, a University of Virginia political analyst,
said Goode's attendance at Allen's event is not good news for Robb."it's
bad news for Democrats and good news for Republicans, but how bad and how
good is yet to be determined,' Sabato said" (Bob Gibson, The Daily
Progress, December 18, 1999).
"'It has to be worrisome to Chuck Robb,' he said. 'It's more
than suggesting that Virgil will be very helpful to George Allen and not
Robb'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, December 18, 1999).
