"Even though only 41 percent of registered Charlottesville voters
went to the polls Tuesday, registrar Sheri Iachetta said she was 'tickled
with the turnout. I'm as happy as I can be'" (Davide Dukcevich,
The Daily Progress, November 4, 1999).
"While the turnout was 14 percentage points below the 1995 figure,
Iachetta said she feared much worse. Because city voters had only one contested
race to choose from - Couric's successful bid for reelection against Republican
Jane Maddux, 'some people were predicting the turnout to be only 20 percent,'
she said" (Davide Dukcevich, The Daily Progress, November 4, 1999).
In the 1998
5th District Congressional race when Democratic Incumbent Virgil Goode
ran unopposed, only 22.7% of registered voters in Charlottesville cast their
ballots.
