"Fifth District Rep. Virgil H. Goode, I-Rocky Mount, basked in the raucous approval of area and state Republicans on Saturday night as he criticized President Clinton and unofficially endorsed former governor George F. Allen for the U.S. Senate race (Maria Sanminatelli, The Daily Progress, February 20, 2000).

Goode "praised Allen - who is challenging Charles S. Robb, D-McLean, for his seat in the Senate - as a worthy leader who has strengthened education and pushed for stricter parole in Virginia"(Maria Sanminatelli, The Daily Progress, February 20, 2000).

"Goode also poked fun at Clinton's State of the Union address, which listed a series of proposed programs Goode said would break down to a $3.5 billion expense for each of the address' 89 minutes" (Maria Sanminatelli, The Daily Progress, February 20, 2000).

"'Years ago I remember seeing a little badge that said Jefferson was a Democrat,' Goode said, as some of the guests waived bumper stickers that read 'Welcome Virgil' before his eyes. 'I believe with all my heart that if Thomas Jefferson were alive today, never on his lapels ... would he have a badge that said 'I'm a Clinton/Gore Democrat!'" (Maria Sanminatelli, The Daily Progress, February 20, 2000).

"The dinner included such guests as state Attorney General Mark L. Earley, Lt. Gov. John H. Hager, 7th District Rep. Thomas J. Bliley Jr., R-Richmond, and state Delegate Pale C. Harris, R- Albemarle County" (Maria Sanminatelli, The Daily Progress, February 20, 2000).

"Dale McGlothlin, chairman of the Charlottesville Republican Party, [says] he was delighted to land Goode as the featured speaker for the GOP's annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Feb. 19 at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, February 3, 2000).

On a side note, Abraham Lincoln was born Feb. 12, 1809 and died April 15, 1865. In the week ending Feb 11th, the House of Representatives voted 385 to 9 (HR1451) to establish "a commission to plan a national celebration in 2009 of the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln" (Votes in Congress, The Daily Progress, February 13, 2000).

"The birthday planning is expected to cost up to $1.5 million through 2004. A yes vote was to pass the bill. Voting yes: Sisisky, Goode, Bliley" (Votes in Congress, The Daily Progress, February 13, 2000).
