POSITION STATEMENT ON MEADOWCREEK PARKWAY BY THE CHARLOTTESVILLE AREA LEGISLATIVE ACTION COALITION (Received February 11, 2000) "'Our community needs the Meadowcreek Parkway. Charlottesville and Albemarle County have planned this road for 30 years. Every City Council and County Board of Supervisors during that period has reaffirmed support for the Meadowcreek Parkway. In 1994, City Council voiced unanimous support for the current alignment of the road, and in July of 1999 again voted their endorsement. Opponents of the Parkway are attempting to politicize and revisit the issue by making it a prime debatable topic of the City Council elections in May of 2000. The citizens of Charlottesville have voiced their support for the Parkway, which is the kind of effective, cooperative long range planning that is essential to preserving our quality of life. There are far more important issues affecting the lives of Charlottesville citizens. Let the forthcoming elections deal with forward thinking concerning economic development, revitalization of the core city, safety and security of neighborhoods, and education of our children. CALAC believes that the debate over the Parkway has been thoroughly handled in an open public forum. It is time to move on!'" Note: CALAC has been described in The Daily Progress as a business group which provided seed money for a Local Action for the Meadowcreek Parkway [LAMP] back in April or May (Davide Dukcevich, The Daily Progress, May 7, 1999). CALAC is a partnership of the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR), the Blue Ridge Homebuilders Association (BRHA) and the Chamber of Commerce. As it's name implies, LAMP is an organization which supports the creation of Meadowcreek Parkway, which it feels is vital to the community.
