"Delegate Paul Harris, R-Albemarle County, said that [Independent Virgil] Goode is popular throughout the district, especially among Republicans and Independents. 'Most Republicans and independents and a sizable number of Democrats will support Virgil,' Harris said. 'I don't think he has any reason to lose sleep over the developments [John Boyd's and Allen Hale's seeking the Democratic nomination] over the last several days'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, February 4, 2000).

"Harris added, 'Napoleon once said, Never trifle with your enemies when they are busy destroying themselves'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, February 4, 2000).
