""Try
as I might, I can't really figure out if you will vote to build a series
of bypasses around and through Charlottesville. I understand that VDOT and
Albemarle are partners in planning, but the responsibility for creating
an urban corridor is ours. To properly route UVA, Hwy 29 and suburban commuter
traffic, we simply have to build new routes, or dramatically enlarge existing
ones. I am a lifelong Democrat, and I'm advocating that we quit sticking
our heads in the sand and recognize that we have to make some hard decisions
about how we want Charlottesville to function in the presence of 40,000
commuters. I know some neighborhoods will suffer. Denying that proactive
transportation planning and implementation are achievable strikes me as
cowardice of the worst kind. Please, support efforts to build an infrastructure
that is efficient, that gets the cars out of residential neighborhoods unless
that is where they want to be. If we are done growing as a city, maybe we
can get away with doing the barest minimum, like we are right now. I can
assure you that Albemarle county has an easy time of pushing all its suburban
developement into the ring around Charlottesville. Why? Because, doing so
enables them to maintain quality county attributes. Seems logical that we
attempt to maintain our "Charlottesvilleness.""
