George Edward Loper

Family

I was born on 10 November 1946 at Saint Joseph's Maternity in Houston, Texas at 10:25 p.m. and was named after my mother's father Edward and my mother's brother George.

At the time of my birth, my father *Joe William Loper, Jr. was owner of Loper's Grocery Store in**Port Arthur and my mother Mary Loper was a housewife.

I have two brothers, Joe and John , and three step-sisters, Margo, Debbie, and Michele.

On 22 July 1972, I married Ann Lewis Booker at her mother's home in New Orleans, Louisiana. We have three children: Matthew, Edward, and Hoy . We moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1975.

*In 1998, my Dad turned 80 years old. See Commendation by Virgil Goode, Birthday Greeting from Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton, 80th Birthday Party Celebration and What A Wonderful Day To Be Alive!

Dad died on November 11, 2002.

**Port Arthur, Texas is proud to call itself the home of Jivin' Gene Bourgeois (famous for "Breaking Up is Hard to Do"), Zachary Breaux (contemporary jazz artist), Clifton Chenier (The King of Zydeco), Johnny Preston Courville (famous for "Running Bear"), Ted Dunbar (guitarist and jazz artist), Janis Lynn Joplin (who can forget "Me and Bobby McGee"), Tiny Moore (played the fiddle for Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys), Robert Rauschenberg (contemporary artist), Bill Rogers (writer and arranger for Frank Sinatra, Sr.), Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr. (author of "Running Bear"), and of Edgar Winters.

Education

I received a Bachelors of Arts in Economics from the University of Texas in Austin in 1970; a Masters of Science in Social Work from Columbia University School of Social Work in New York City in 1975; and engaged in Postgraduate work in the Department of Sociology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1982. I haven't learned a damn thing since.
