"Protestors chanted, rallied and tried to bring food to their Madison Hall-bound brethren Friday afternoon as the demonstration for a living wage at the University of Virginia entered its third day. As a throng of demonstrators attempted to bring food and textbooks to the 17 students who have holed up in Madison Hall since Wednesday morning they were met by a UVa administrator flanked by two policemen. The administrator refused the food-bringers' entry, repeatedly saying "the building is closed" in response to the protestors' pleas and taunts. "Why do they have to choose between their right to free expression and their right to food?" one student yelled. "No one should be hungry!" another yelled. ![]() The administrator informed the protestors that if they left the food outside, those inside were welcome to come out and enjoy the donations. The protestors are campaigning for a "living wage" for the
universitys lowest paid employees, an amount they put at $10.72 an
hour. The wage is now $9.37 an hour for UVas lowest paid workers.
The university last month raised the minimum wage of all academic and medical
center employees by 49 cents to $9.37." (Dave Hendrick, The Daily
Progress, April 14, 2006)
